Student Voices Section (In Progress)

“I made the verse. I picked the thread color. I poked every letter myself. My words are on the card. It’s mine.”
– Josh, speller & board contributor

We are building a student-led page where spellers will share their voices, reflections, hopes, frustrations, and brilliance — typed one letter at a time.

Speller Spotlight: Fill-in-the-Blank Prompts

We believe every student should be part of the story. These prompts are designed to be answered one letter at a time, with the help of a trained communication partner (CRP). We’ll feature these answers — typed by spellers — on our site, in cards, or as quotes that lead the way.

Prompt List for Speller Reflections

  1. “The first time I spelled a word, I felt…”
  2. “People used to think I couldn’t…”
  3. “Now, I help run a business by…”
  4. “My favourite part of making a card is…”
  5. “I’m most proud of…”
  6. “What I want people to know about non-speakers is…”
  7. “Selling my own product makes me feel…”
  8. “The hardest part of spelling is…”
  9. “The best part of Purposeful Point is…”
  10. “One day, I want to…”

CRP Guide: How to Support Students in Answering the Prompts

Purpose:
This guide helps Communication Regulation Partners (CRPs) support spellers to respond to prompts respectfully and calmly, while keeping the focus on autonomy and voice.

Step 1: Set the Tone

“These questions will help others understand what it’s like to be you. There’s no pressure to answer everything — just what feels right today.”

Give them the option to stay anonymous or use a name/initials.

Step 2: Create a Calm Space

  • Reduce distractions

Step 3: Co-Regulate

  • Encourage lowering the arm between letters
  • Offer prompts only when needed
  • Whisper tone can reduce spelling speed
  • Pause. Breathe. Wait. Reaffirm.

Step 4: Ask Gently, Give Time

“The first one says: ‘The first time I spelled a word, I felt…’
We’ll take our time. No rush.”

Write their answer exactly as it’s spelled.

Step 5: Celebrate & Record

“That was brave. Your words will help someone else feel seen.”

Type up the final answer and ask if they’d like to sign it or keep it anonymous.
